Paid Surveys: What Do They Really Mean?

Almost every time a person opens his or her email these days, there are several invitations to sign up and get paid to take online surveys. Who is offering these surveys? What do they pay? What do the results mean? These are some questions we will try to answer here.

Who is offering these surveys?

A wide variety of online firms offer opinion surveys and paid surveys on the web. Most of these firms are hired by specific companies to gather information that will affect the next wave of technology or new product releases. Surveys have long been a favored method of collecting this type of information. Offering these surveys online makes it possible to gather more information in a shorter amount of time than mail or personal interviews. There are some who would say that the results of a paid survey are invalid, but the pay is actually offered as an incentive to just get people to take the surveys.

What do they pay?

Most online surveys are done through firms that offer points for completion. Once enough points have been accumulated, a person can order gifts from a catalog, much the way people used to collect stamps from grocery stores. Other companies offer a certain number of entries into a cash sweepstakes for completing an online survey. Even though there is no guarantee of a cash payment unless one wins, this seems to be an attractive enticement to get people to take online surveys.

A very few survey companies actually pay cash for taking their surveys. Most of these are looking for people from specific demographic groups, however. They often have a few screening questions at the beginning of the survey to determine whether a person qualifies to take the whole thing and receive payment. More people will attempt these surveys and be screened out than are allowed to finish. Because of this screening process, the results of these surveys can be questioned concerning their validity.

The paid online surveys that offer the highest cash amounts usually require a person to purchase a product or service and evaluate it after a certain number of days use. The companies that offer these items will pay handsomely for feedback that helps them to improve their product or service. The survey companies that handle these will pay people to take the surveys and perform the evaluations to get valid results.

What do the results mean?

The results obtained from paid online surveys are used by manufacturers and service providers to gain insight into what improvements can be made to their offerings. They also want to know what features people will be willing to pay a higher price for. Opinions gathered through online paid surveys are used to make these determinations and shape the marketplace of the future.

Online surveys, paid or otherwise, are an important tool used by companies around the world. They are able to gather large volumes of information in a short time that allow these companies to make decisions that will have an impact on all future dealings and offerings.
